This small 3.30m long blunt bowed dinghy with its red sails can be seen on almost any stretch of water in Britain. The boat is an excellent primer as it is virtually foolproof and can be sailed in strong winds by relative novices. It can also be raced seriously to a high standard when its spinnaker is used. The Mirror dinghy is used by the RYA as its main junior training dinghy. At present HLSC is one of 6 clubs in the UK the Mirror Armada Training scheme targeted at training young sailors. Many young club members start sailing at club level and then move on to participating in area and national training courses with top level RYA coaches. Some of these courses are held at Hollingworth Lake. The Mirror dinghies are readily available second hand or for home building in kit form as well as professionally built. They are sailed with 1 or 2 people. New developments in the class are an improved FRP hull and the move to a full length mast in place of the mast and gaff gunter rig that has been used for over 40 years |
